About The Awadh Project: The Global Archive of the Girmitiya Soul

The Awadh Project is a digital conservatory and research initiative dedicated to the linguistic, historical, and cultural preservation of the Awadhi-Bhojpuri diaspora.

Over 150 years ago, our ancestors—the Girmitiyas—departed the fertile plains of the United Provinces and Bihar, crossing the Kala Pani to the shores of Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, South Africa, and Mauritius. They carried few possessions, but they carried a language that refused to die.

What began as the dialects of the Awadh and Bhojpur heartlands evolved through resilience into the vibrant, living tongues we know today: Fiji Baat, Caribbean Hindustani, and Sarnami.

Our Mission: From "Classroom" to "Archive"

We do not just teach a language; we document a legacy. The Awadh Project serves as a bridge between the standardized roots in India and the creolized branches of the diaspora. We are building the world’s most accessible repository for:

1. The Linguistic Continuum

• Etymological Mapping: Tracing the journey of specific words from the villages of Basti, Gonda, and Azamgarh to the cane fields of the Pacific and Atlantic.
• Dialectal Comparisons: Analyzing the subtle shifts between Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and their diaspora evolutions.
• Phonetic Preservation: Archiving the unique accents and cadences of elders before they are lost to time.

2. The Folk and Oral Traditions

• The Biraha and Sohar Collections: Transcribing and translating the folk songs of birth, longing, and labor.
• Chowtal and Bhajan Analysis: Exploring the technical structure and Hindustani roots of our religious and festive music.
• Proverbs (Kahawats): Documenting the "village wisdom" that remains the backbone of Indo-Diasporic philosophy.

3. Material and Social History

• The Jahaji Bhai Records: Researching the kinship bonds formed on the ships that transcended caste and creed.
• Culinary Linguistics: Investigating how our food names (from Bara to Lota) provide a map of our ancestral geography.
• Geographic Genealogy: Identifying the specific districts of origin to help the diaspora visualize their ancestral "Basti."
